Rian de Waal is the artistic director of the biennial Peter the Great Festival in Groningen (NL) and the annual Rhijnauwen Chamber Music Festival in Bunnik (NL)
In the Peter the Great Festival young talented strings, pianists and organists from 12 to 24 years old from all over the world follow master classes and chamber music lessons. This festival cooperates with the German Musikalische Sommer Ostfriesland and from July 20th until August 11th concerts can be heard at many locations in and around Groningen (NL) and Aurich (Germany). The Rhijnauwen Chamber Music Festival began in 1994 as a long cherished wish of Rian de Waal and his wife, the mezzo-soprano Marion van den Akker. “Making music for friends with friends” was the motto. In May 2006 the thirteenth and also the last festival was celebrated. Time for new plans.
